South Axholme Sharks Committee Meeting held at The Red Lion Hotel, Epworth on the 5th April 2006
Present: Simon Latham (Chairman), Kevin Dunne (Head Coach), Margaret Gray, Tim Blackham, Margaret Pennell, Jim Cook, Bev Webb, Julie Hirst & Jill Watson. Apologies: Gail Riggott, Sandra Temperton, David Gray, Mary Lambert, Lynn Crawford & Stuart Starbuck. Minutes of Last Meeting Passed as a true record. Matters Arising Kev advised that Sandra had written to the management of Gainsborough Pool regarding the health & safety issues that were brought to our attention at a Gala on the 11 th February last, also included in this letter was a request for details of any Public Liability Insurance however, she has not had a response yet. Lynn advised through Kev, that she had made some enquiries as to the cost etc. of hiring Riddings Pool in Scunthorpe for possible Galas however, the Pool there is going to undergo refurbishment shortly and the Pool hire cost is in the order of £50 per hour, which is much more costly than hiring Gainsborough Pool. Therefore it was agreed that we should put the decision re this on hold for the time being. Kev advised that Gainsborough Pool are to start their inside refurbishment programme after the 8th of July 2006 and this should not effect any Galas that we have booked there. Tim advised that he had been to a DMASA meeting and it was mentioned that DARTES are possibly going to run a 200m IM gala on the 17 th of September 2006 and this will be for the up to the 14 year age groups only. Tim also paid the per capita fee of £180 to DARTES. Kev confirmed that Rob Jenkins had paid the ASA fees some two weeks ago although we are still on the ASA ‘blacklist of non payers’ but apparently the cheque is sat in a tray waiting to be processed. They have assured us that our name will be removed from the list shortly. The DMASA affiliation fee still needs to be paid – refer Sandra to check if it has been sent already. Sandra also confirmed that she has bought two bright yellow Lifeguard T-shirts for use at Galas, after the complaint at a previous Gala that the Lifeguards were not easily recognised. Correspondence Letter received from Trenton Dolphins asking if we would make a contribution towards the cost of new anti-wave lane ropes at Gainsborough Pool, total cost approx. £1,500. Apparently the lane ropes are only used for Galas, as Trenton Dolphins do not use them for training. We would probably use the lane ropes at about 6 Galas a year including the 4 Club Champs Galas. It was decided that we would look at making a contribution but on equal footings with Trenton Dolphins, Gainsborough Council, Gainsborough Pool itself. (Bev to write to Trenton Dolphins to advise of the above and try and obtain more specific details). Letter received from Epworth Pool Committee regarding the 10 year anniversary of the Pool opening in June this year. The SACSPA Committee are organising a celebration day to be held on the 10 th of June 2006. This is to be a non-profit making day and will start at about 11.00am with a free swimming session for anybody, cutting of a cake and press photos. Then at approx. 2.30pm there will be a ‘fun gala’, which the SACSPA Committee have asked the Sharks Committee to organise. Later at about 5.30pm to 7.30pm there is to be a disco and BBQ. Jim advised that they estimate that there will be about 200-250 children involved. The organising of the ‘fun gala’ was discussed at great length and the Sharks Committee decided that they would support this day but they would have to look at a sub-committee to organise this particular part of the day as not all Committee members could commit to the organisation of the event. Jim is to advise the SACSPA Committee re this. Jim Cook and Margaret Gray volunteered to be part of the sub-Committee and some of the other Sharks Committee said they would be willing to help on the day. Coaches Report The second round (first round to Sharks) of the Barnsley Minor League took place on the 11 th March and Sharks won with 151 points against Sheffield City with 120 points, Chapel Town with 116 points and the Borough of Barnsley with 101 points. The next Barnsley Minor league Gala was held at Goldthorpe on the 1 st April, where Sharks came second with 133 points, Rotherham Metro won with 138 points and the Borough of Barnsley 122 points and Chapel Town 99 points. The second round of the John Harriman Championships was held on the 12 th March and although there was a poor attendance by Sharks swimmers we still managed to get 17 medals! Bridie Smith won gold in the 11 years 50m backstroke and got 4 medals in all, Holly Lewis won a bronze and two silver medals, Daniel Richardson won gold in the 11 years 50m backstroke and won 2 silver medals and 1 bronze, Lewis Starbuck won gold in 50m fly and won 2 bronze medals and got a 4 th place and Jodie Rutherford got 4 th and 5 th placings in her age group.Forthcoming Galas Friendly Gala to be held on the 8 th April at Retford Pool, 37 Sharks swimmers are going. Sharks will be swimming with Retford Swimming Club only. Stocksbridge Sprint Gala to be held on the 23 rd April – 13 Sharks swimmers have entered. Rykneld Open Gala to be held on the 6 th May – 10 Sharks swimmers have entered. Any Other Business It was mentioned at a DMASA meeting that we need to check whom from the Club’s swimmers have passed the Competitive Start Award and a written record must be kept re this. This is so that any insurance cover is valid should a swimmer be injured whilst diving in. We need to check with Rob Jenkins if such a log is in place already. Julie Hirst to email Dawn Clarke to obtain more details. There is a Child Protection Workshop to be held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield on the 13 th June. SACSPA is willing to pay for the course. Kev and Jim would like to attend and Kev will speak to Rob re the arrangements. Kev advised that he would like the Committee’s opinion on DARTES swimmers training at Sharks, as recently there has been some confusion with who can swim when. It was agreed that any Sharks swimmer cannot swap and change their Sharks training nights as and when they want, as this shows no consideration for the other swimmers and means that some lanes could become over crowded. Group 1 DARTES swimmers should be allowed to become non-training Sharks members as they swim full time at DARTES but a letter from each swimmer would be appreciated, so at least Kev is aware of the situation. Group 2 DARTES swimmers, who have some training sessions at Sharks should stick to their allocated training times at Sharks unless they have specifically arranged with Kev and Rob to change their sessions before hand. In other words they, like any other Sharks swimmer, cannot just turn up at a training session and expect to be able to train. Sandra has tried to arrange a bus to take Sharks to Deepings for a Gala on the 13 th May however; Holloways who we usually use are already fully booked. The cheapest quote for another bus is coming in at £330, although Sandra will ring around further to check. We should be able to collect approx. £100-£150 on the bus. Kev has put a notice on the board for people to put their names down if they would like to travel on the bus and feels that the swimmers should travel together as a team. A few parents have raised the issue with the Committee that a couple of the Sharks Captains are now non-training members and as such is the Committee happy for them to continue as Captains or should we nominate new captains? It was pointed out that Alison Pennell wrote to the Committee when she became a Group 1 DARTES swimmer and offered to step down as Captain at that time however, the Committee agreed that she should remain as Captain for the time being. The Committee agreed that this should be looked at again at the next meeting as other Captains/Vice-Captains may be leaving in September or will be too old for the Junior positions. The Committee was advised that DARTES have an open invite to all feeder Club swimmers to have a months trial with them at their Sunday afternoon sessions with the possibility of joining DARTES later, the cost is £5. It was thought that if a swimmer was interested they should have a chat with Kev first. Jim advised that the Club would be receiving a letter from DARTES regarding this shortly. Crris Lewis has requested that all Committee members let him have a note of their email addresses, either directly or through Simon. Date of Next Meeting Wednesday the 3rd of May 2006 at The Red Lion Hotel, Epworth for 7.30pm. |
