Agreed as a true record.

Matters Arising

Jeff Buxton advised the Committee that 10 people had attended the recent Officials Course and all were now competent. He also said that the DMASA were holding a separate Officials Course, for which interested parties should let him know asap, 6 possible attendees so far. Anyone who has already been on the Officials Course needs to take a poolside test before the 1st of October 2007, if not already done so. There is going to be a new Officials Course coming into play shortly, which means people, can qualify as either a Club Official, Level 1 Official or Level 2 Official. The minimum age for entry to this course has been reduced to 15 years and the DMASA have advised that they will make a 50% contribution towards the cost of the course for each participant.

Jeff also advised that Sharks have purchased six stopwatches & Laws of Sport Book, in order to encourage further people to take part and hopefully eventually become qualified timekeepers etc.

The Equity Course was attended by Simon and Kev, Sandra was unable to attend because of family commitments and apologises for this. This course was well run and gave Simon and Kev ideas as to how best promote the Club in the correct manner i.e. what is acceptable and unacceptable.

Angie Shpylka has agreed to take over from Kev as the Records Officer, although this may not come into play until we have the up-dated disc for the computer. Kev advised that it would be best if we waited for the new version to be up produced before purchasing and Angie can then take this forward. Cost of new version circa. £35. Kev is quite happy to continue with this job until the new disc is purchased.

Angie gave out copies of the leaflet she has designed for the Queen Elizabeth High School distribution. These are really well designed and thank you to Angie for this. The Committee agreed that it would be a good idea to have some of these available on poolside. Angie is going to amend the web-site address to our own Sharks site rather than Epworth Pool as a whole on this leaflet. It was suggested that we could do a mail shot to local schools asking them to promote us through this leaflet.
The letter to Jeff Squires in response to his letters mentioned in the last Minutes was sent but Jeff advised Kev that he had never received it when asked. Bev has posted a duplicate copy since. Kev approached Jeff re helping on Poolside again, as suggested in the letter; he said he had not been asked. The Committee agreed that if there was any way that we could move forward with this we should do so and Sandra agreed to talk to Dorothy Squires as soon as she could.

The new Masters swimming slot has been agreed and this will start on Monday the 2nd of April from 9pm to 10pm.

The organisation of the Sharks Open Meet is progressing nicely, in that the age groups, events and cut off times (for most events) have been decided i.e. 9yrs, 10yrs, 11-12yrs, 13-14yrs and 15yrs & over, all events will be 50m apart from the IMs and the Cannon Team events. It will be a B/C Grade Gala with morning and afternoon sessions. There will be an advert in the Swimming Times in May (Julie Hirst has already emailed the advert to the Swimming Times). The next step is to organise the helpers; Sandra has rang Stuart Walker and asked him if he will be our Chief Referee, which he has provisionally agreed to, as long as it does not clash with any other event he has already committed himself to. Other possible Referees to consider, if Stuart not available, are Rodney Briggs or John Giles.

Simon advised that he is half way through organising a risk assessment on the Pool and will take this forward as a tick box exercise, which he thought would make things simpler.

Simon apologised for not printing off the gala results and pinning them to our notice board but he will endeavour to do this from now on.

We are still in need of ‘Roving Reporters’ to write short pieces for Galas we take part in. At the moment Cris Lewis has been taking this role on, alongside Julie Hirst but any other volunteers would be most appreciated; perhaps this could be considered on a rotational basis. Julie Hirst has agreed to do the write ups on the Masters Meets.

Coach’s Report

The Barnsley Minor League Gala (Division 2) held at Ponds Forge on the 4th of March 2007 was a difficult Gala for Sharks, as we had some key swimmers missing however we managed to come 3rd out of the 4 Teams, the points being as follows: 152 points Sheffield City, 120 points Wakefield, 111 points Sharks and 104 points Chapeltown. The non-competing Team for this particular Gala was Askern Spa. Well done to the following swimmers - Lily Webb who came first in the 25m breaststroke, Emily Scott first in the 50m free, the 10yr old girls relay team who came first in the freestyle relay, the 14yr old girls relay team who came first in the freestyle relay, Laura Holroyd who came first in the 50m breaststroke and Emily Fordham who came first in the 50m free.

The 10th of March 2007 saw some 20 Sharks taking part in the Scarborough Kingfishers Meet, which was a very enjoyable Gala and all swimmers who took part, came back with something. In total we won 40 trophies/medals and 16 speeding tickets. There was however an issue with the Speeding Tickets for the C Grade swimmers, as instead of receiving a Speeding Ticket the swimmer was automatically placed with the B Grade swimmers and therefore were not issued with a Speeding ticket. A complaint was lodged and the organisers/referee agreed that this was a bad decision and these C Grade swimmers would be issued with the relevant Speeding Tickets by post.

The second John Harriman Championships was held on the 11th of March 2007 at Adwick, with 10 Sharks swimmers taking part. We came back with 15 medals including 9 gold medals and of course the usual array of Speeding Tickets. Lily Webb came first in the 25m fly, Johnny Pennell won 3 golds and a 6th placing, Lucy Windle came first in the 25m breaststroke and 3rd in the 25m backstroke, Luke Shyplka won a gold in the 50m free, Charlie Cocks came first in the 50m free and Daniel Leggott swam really well and came home with Speeding Tickets.

Some Sharks swimmers took part in the Yorkshires under the DARTES banner. Anna Laird finaled in the 12yrs 100m backstroke, Holly Lewis finaled in the 50m breaststroke, Emily Fordham finaled in the 50m fly but no one told her she had therefore she unfortunately missed the final. Luke Shpylka and Matthew Hirst formed part of the 10yr old boys relay team and came 5th in the Medley and 6th in the free relays.

Forthcoming Galas

Saturday the 1st of March is the Dinsdale League Gala to be held at Thorne.

Kev advised that there should have been a friendly Gala at Retford on the 7th of April but he has had no response to his emails regarding this, so he is presuming this is either no longer on or they don’t want us to take part!

The Bridon Shield Team Gala is to be held on the 29th of April and Kev has picked the teams for this, which are up on the notice board and the web site. The cost for each team is £8 and with potentially 32 teams entered the total cost is circa. £250, with all entries to be in by the 1st of April. Kev was concerned that in certain age groups there were only 4 swimmers with no reserves and obviously if one swimmer did not tick his/her name to swim we would lose the entry money for that team. One idea for next year would be to obtain an entry fee for each swimmer, say £1 each for each swim. Kev to go ahead and enter the teams as he sees fit and Simon and Angie are to chase swimmers for their confirmed entries.

The Spalding Open Meet on the 5th and 6th of May has now been cancelled due to lack of response.

Lincs Senior League Round 2 to be held on the 12th of May, venue to be confirmed.

DARTES Open Meet on the 20th May has been changed to the 19th of May due to a double booking at Adwick Pool; unfortunately this now clashes with the Lincs Junior League Round 2. Kev would appreciate it if as many swimmers as possible could make themselves available for the Lincs League.

The popular Fenlands Open Meet is to be held on the weekend of the 26th and 27th of May with 17 Sharks swimmers entered so far.
Agenda Items Discussed

Jim was not available to give us an update on the Pool Committees possible proposal to Sharks regarding perhaps changing how the Club is run. Committee agreed to discuss at the next meeting if update available.

Swim 21 – Margaret & David advised that they now need more help with this as they are spending about 2 hours every night dealing with matters in this respect. We therefore now need different people to help and to take ownership of a section each, in order to relieve the pressure on Margaret and David.  Margaret suggested that we get our proposal in first then allocate sections after this. Laura O’Leary is to visit the Pool next week to overview our folder, then we have one week to update and complete it before it is sent in again. When this comes back to us the Committee needs to address this issue and appoint its officers going forward. The Committee agreed we should have a separate meeting next month to go over this in full.

Club Champs – it has already been agreed that the format of Club Champs should remain the same, with the medals/trophies remaining as they are. The Committee agreed that at the social evening Kev would only present the Sprint Ladder Trophies and the first place trophies for each event & the most improved swimmer trophies etc. should be presented at the winter social evening. Only the first place trophies and special trophies will be engraved as usual. The other medals will be presented to the swimmers on poolside at each Club Champs Gala, which means we need to be organised re placings on the night. Kev to email Cris re this and to ask if the Meet Manager system could accommodate this on Poolside. It was suggested that at each social night we should have a party theme and perhaps we could organise some games, especially for the younger swimmers, for these events and maybe a tombola, as well as the usual raffle to raise some funds for the Club.

Any Other Business

DMASA Education Report by Jeff Buxton 27th March 2007

10 persons attended the first in house officials course. This consisted of a introduction to swimming, theory side regarding ASA laws of the sport and discussions regarding the official duties for (time keeper and Chief Timekeeper), followed by a practical timekeeper test on pool side

All persons proved to be very competent and we received good feedback following the course. Which has seen a sudden response of these people volunteering for timekeeper duties at forth coming gala’s. Well done to all.

6 No    Books total       cost £30 + PP = £35
6 No    Stopwatches     cost £4 ea + pp + get one free (so we have 7 avail) = £30

DMASA Report:–

Attended the General Purpose Committee Meeting dated 6th March 2007.Copy of minutes posted on notice board. Resume of minutes are as follows:

Letters sent to Andy Madox DMBC, in response to his letter and Dennis Buxton regarding constitutional matters.
Copy of letter from Dennis Buxton available, which discussed entry to DARTES for out of area swimmers without having full membership of a feeder club, or feeder club head coaches sanction as well as the  swimmer meeting the DARTES criteria for membership.
Action: The chairman asked that DARTES committee to re-look at their own constitution and align it with the requirements to meet the DMSA constitution to address and resolve the issue.

DMASA education

Hop Davies said the letter was not a complaint to the swimming development in Doncaster, but to the ASA re course’s and how they are expected to be run.

Hop Davies reported the teacher’s course ongoing was going well at Ellington, but he was disappointed by having to use Saturday afternoons as it is proving difficult to get young beginners for the teaching lessons due to poor availability and extortionate pricing. Hop felt this was not in the interest of swimming. It was hoped that feeder clubs will support future courses and provide younger beginners and possible venue for courses

DARTES Head Coaches report

Copy available on the notice board at SA sharks, of the DARTES swimmers who competed in the recent Yorkshire Champs. SAS swimmers featured prominently

Swimming Development

A meeting held between DMASA and DMBC. Doncaster council are active but not responsible for swimming in Doncaster. Andy Madox had stated that swimming will not be a key sport at this time Swimming development is up in the air therefore feeder clubs should encourage their own development. However DMBC did say that swimming was one of the 7 focused points, for Doncaster sport and will be recognised in the future as part of the sports network, for which each sport will have its own board to look at swimming development.  It is reputed that £3m is available for strategic rather than capital to promote swimming.

Stroke Clinic

DMSA to consider running a series of stroke clinics for Coaches, swimmers and others. Objective to improve swimming in Doncaster  and feeder clubs and raise the standard of coaching.  DARTES Head coach to be approached along with other recognised coaches, A charge will be made for the event as the cost of appointing a stroke clinic tutor is not cheap. Action: To be discussed in more detail at the next meeting

AOB

DARTES asked for the use of Laptop for the Head coach. Action  DMASA committee agreed to purchase a new laptop.

Re Katie Lindop – Sandra brought up a valid point in that Katie is not now affiliated to Sharks and therefore needs to affiliated to another DMASA Feeder Club in order to swim for DARTES, even if this means her just paying the annual ASA Membership to one of the Feeder Clubs for insurance purposes and of course the Committee had nothing against this if she wished to still use SA Sharks as her Feeder Club. Sandra to ring Lianne re this.

Courses for Masters Swimmers – David Alexander of the Yorkshire ASA has approached Kev and advised that he can organise a stroke clinic purely for Masters. We could perhaps ask Thorne and Gainsborough Masters to join us for this. Kev to email David re this and advise further.

Jeff Buxton open to offers – Jeff advised that he has been dropped from the Buxton Relay Team for Club Champs and he is open to offers from other teams. It looks like the revised Buxton team are out to win this year!
