Matthew Hirst reaches another final at the Yorkshire Championships - Sprints Day
A day of mixed results and emotions for Sharks swimmers
In the last gala of the 2006 Yorkshire Individual Championships several sharks swimmers produced good personal bests. Mathew Hirst and Holly Lewis swam under Sharks, whilst Hannah Hirst, Anna Laird, Emily Fordham, Katie Lindop and Christopher Watson swam under Dartes.
Matthew Hirst reached his second final of the series with a magnificent swim in heat 4 of the 50m Breaststroke to qualify 8th for the final with a personal best of 48.70. He didn't let the event overawe him and swam within a 10th second of the same time to earn a pennant for 8th place. Matthew also swam a great Backstroke, breaking his own Club record set at the Harrogate Open in January.
Holly Lewis, the only other swimmer representing Sharks at the Yorkshires this year, continued her recent form with three good personal bests, lopping yet another 2 seconds off in the 50 freestyle. Her best finishing position was 17th in the same event. Like Hannah Hirst, Holly was only just in her new age group and had the championships been just 10 days earlier she would have finaled in all three events.
Katie Lindop was the most successful swimmer with a dartes hat on producing a great swim in heat 8 of the 50m Backstroke to qualify 5th for the final. In a hard fought final katie stayed with the leaders until the turn and battled strongly for bronze to loose out by a touch.
Christopher Watson made up for just missing out on a place in the final of the 50m Butterfly, by qualifying 6th for the final of the 50m Backstroke and then matched a 6th place in the final itself.
Our leading 9 year old girl, Alexandra Cook had a mixed day, entering all four 50m sprints for her age. Alex managed a personal best of 38.77 in the 50m Freestyle to finish 18th. Her best position came in the 50m butterfly with a 13th and a time just outside her previous best.
It was Hannah Hirst's birthday on Saturday so she was also swimming just into a new age group. Nevertheless she produced some good swims with very creditable times.
Emily Fordham and Anna Laird couldn't quite keep up the momentum of the last few, busy weeks, getting close but not achieving any personal bests on the day.
