Charli Squires & Emily Fordham Battle for Honours at Rykneld. A small contingent of just 5 Sharks to 8 cups, 12 medals and 3 speeding tickets at the Rykneld Open on 6th May 2006. With two no shows there were only 5 swimmers from Sharks at the Rykneld Open. Nevertheless, they all worked hard to represent the club and were well rewarded for their efforts. Charli Squires continued her welcome return to form by getting impressive personal bests in every event she swam in. Overall, she took a total of 19.59 seconds off her PB's on the day, including 7.62 seconds off 100m Butterfly - a fantastic achievement. First up for Charli was the 100m IM in which she narrowly missed gold losing nearly 3 seconds off per personal best to come at 1:18:24.
Emily Fordham took a massive 8 seconds off her PB for the 100m Backstroke to get a Silver in a race that yo-yo'd at each turn. A terrific swim in the 100m IM gave her a new PB time of 1.21:19 and a speeding ticket. A bronze came next in the 100m Breaststroke followed by a 4th place medal in the 100m Freestyle with another personal best. A wonderful butterfly time of 1.22:33 gave her a Gold - leaving the field standing. Alex Cook managed three personal bests in one of her last events as a nine year old. Its a welcome return to form for Alex. Let's hope she continues to be rewarded for her hard work. It was a tough age group this year and her valiant efforts only gained her medals for two 4th places, a 5th and two sixth places. Keith Squires gave us a master class in the 100m Breaststroke leading from the start and seemingly adding speed with every turn to finish well clear of the field with a personal best time of 1:17.12. and a gold medal. He would later clinch a bronze in 100m Backstroke. Holly Lewis failed to get a personal best for the first time this year. Paradoxically, this helped her avoid speeding tickets for everything but the 50m freestyle and to a gold in 50m Backstroke, Bronze in 50m Breaststroke and a medal for 4th place in the 100m IM.
